Agenda 3/29

Refining Audio Portrait Roughcuts

1. Work in groups of 2 or 3 (partners posted below) to give feedback and share technical skills (45 min - 1hr)

    a.  Explain the story/portrait to your partner(s) in less than one minute.

    b. Go over each other's transcript and make notes on it:

  • Is there a strong story with universal appeal?

  • Where is the climax and resolution?

  • Where is the beginning of the piece? Find a beginning that hooks the audience and flows well with what the director wants to communicate about the person

  • Select the most interesting quotes in the interview

  • Note: You do not need "My name is...." or "I am from...." or "I am xx years old..." unless it relates to the story in a very direct way

     c. Listen to each other's pieces in Premiere (you'll have to use individual computers) and                 take notes for them as you listen:

  • Are their interview audio levels in the right place, between -12db and -20db?  Make sure nothing peaks (audio meter doesn't hit red)

  • Are their audio transitions smooth?  Not cutting off any words, can't tell when using room tone, music and sound effects not overpowering or jarring (unless that's the intent)

  • Are their SFX and music around -24db?

  • Anything else you noticed?  How did the piece make you feel?  Did you feel a connection to the person being interviewed?  What's working, what's not working?

  • Ask the other person if they need help with anything technically in Premiere. Anything they don't understand?
      d. If you're in a group of 3, switch again.  Each piece should be reviewed by 2 people.              You should spend 15 minutes on each person's piece

2. Individual work session, but sit next to your partner(s) so you can be available for feedback and questions.  And I'll be available too, of course.

Hopefully you'll be able to finish most of your piece today, but the final piece isn't due until the *Tuesday* after Spring Break.  Note this is Tuesday and not Wednesday b/c we'll be playing the pieces in Wednesday night's lecture.  Final piece must be uploaded to Soundcloud and posted on your blog by Tuesday @ midnight
