Transcripts and Multi-Track Audio Editing in Premiere
1. Transcribe your audio inserting the timecode in a way that's helpful to you. For short pieces, you may want to put it in every minute. For longer interviews where you think you'll use the whole answer, you may only need to put the timecode at the beginning of the subjects answers and at the end. Take note of any ambient noises that may affect the your recording. When you're finished recording, copy and paste the text into a new document. If you have several files, upload and transcribe them one at a time, always starting your timecode at 0:00
2. Highlight the sections you want to use, make note of possible beginnings, endings, climaxes, and resolutions.
3. Sequence the parts of the interview you want to use in the order you want to edit them in Premiere. 1,2,3,4,5, etc etc
4. Start a new project in Premiere:
5. Import your audio files (Command-I while in Bottom Left Window)
6. Make a New Sequence, using the AVCHD 24fps setting, and name it Roughcut
7. Go to Section 1 of your transcript, and, using the timecode, select the In and Out points and put it on your Roughcut Sequence (i, o, and then comma)
8. Move the playhead forward a few seconds
9. Go through the rest of your transcript, and lay out the rest of your selections, in order (2,3,4...) on your Roughcut timeline.
10. Now go to your roomtone, cut out a 5 second chunk, and place that before your first section on the timeline, and in between all of the other sections on your timeline, on Audio Track 2
11. Check the audio levels of Track 1, the interview, using the audio meter on the right. They should be in between -12db and -20db. If you need to raise or lower the volume, you click on the horizontal line in the middle of the clip, and raise or lower it. (You may have to click on the wrench and turn on Audio Keyframe Display)
12. Once you have the general volume set on the first clip, copy and paste these attributes onto all of your Track 1 clips. (Select the clip, copy, select the rest of the clips and go to edit > paste attributes)
13. Set your room tone to around -24db
14. add Audio transitions between all of your clips and all of the room tone (to start, you can adjust later.) Select the two clips and hit Command-Shift-D
15. Download your SFX and Music and put them in the appropriate folders on your hard drive. Import the folders into Premiere.
16. Put your SFX on Audio Track 3 and adjust the volume to -24db. Apply transitions
17. Put your music on Audio Track 4 and adjust the volume to -24db. Apply transitions.
18. Finetune!
