New due date for Blog Post 4

Hi, I changed the due date for Blog Post 4, because I didn't feel that one day was enough time for you to write the blog post, so it's due on 5/9.  You also have a rough draft of Project 3 due on that day, fyi.

Examples from Last Semester's Project 3

Samanta Filip, The Risky Text:  http://samantafilip.blogspot.com/2017/12/assignment-3-continuity-project.html Jose Suarez, Call:  https://josesmedp160.blogspot.com/2017/12/final-project-call.html Piotr Lapinski, The Handshake : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAs4_zZejGA&feature=youtu.be **what's great about Piotr's piece is that he shot it for spacial continuity, then during the editing process, brought in some discontinuous and continuous elements, so it has some audio montage/dreamspace/color match elements to it.

Post-Production Documents

1. Storyboard 2. Shot List, sequenced in the order you will shoot them (different from storyboard sequence, this is for time management) 3. Synopsis of your story (few sentences - 1 paragraph) and the shooting location.  Hand in the storyboards at the beginning of lecture on Wednesday. You can either handwrite the synopsis and shooting location on the back of the storyboard or put it in a blogpost.

Beautiful Short Piece by George (also Project 3 inspiration)

Hi all, George (in the 3:10 lab) shot this really beautiful 1 minute piece outside class, and I wanted to share it with you.  The cinematography is great.  He said to watch it with the sound off. Something like this would work really well for Project 3.  Just add in a few more panels/shots and a shot that shows you understand on the continuity rules. (He "technically" breaks the 180 rule around 30 seconds.  For the purposes of the class exercise, you would first show him looking out the window, then show what he's looking at - skyline, something on the balcony, etc. - then you could put in the shot that's shot from the outside looking in.) Beautiful work (shooting and acting), George, thanks for sharing

Fine-tuning SFX

Image
The only sound effects for this piece were birds, and I really just layered them in with the music and the voice, but I used them selectively.  And this time, instead of messing with the pen tool, I just made really long fades at both ends, to blend them in with the voice and the music.  An easy way to do this is to start the fade a little before the subject stops talking, and then adjust as necessary.  Sort of the same idea with music...cut it at the end of a beat or transition and then start the fade out a little before that. I started with -24db for the SFX but then went down to about -35db.  Here are screenshots of the SFX layered in and the transitions.  (Add a transition with Command Shift D).  I put the same music at the end of the piece.  The piece is actually a little longer, but I thought 4 minutes was enough for you to listen to and get the idea.... Feel free to comment below if you have any questions Track 1 = Interview Track 2 ...

Fine-Tuning the Music and Pacing Aspects of your Audio Portraits

Image
Hi All, I edited an audio interview I did last year with my Dad to clarify the pacing and music components of creating an audio portrait.  It was a voiceover to a short film, but I just turned it into an audio portrait with music and sfx for the purposes of this class.  Later today I'll post a tutorial for the SFX aspect. The concept is that as my dad has been getting older, he's spending time thinking about tying up lose ends his life and also re-analyzing events and relationships in his past.  One of those lose ends is a farm that's been in our family for over a hundred years.  He begins the interview talking about himself and then goes into the story of the last time he took his mother - who was born on the farm - to the farm, before she died. I thought this would work well for a demo because a lot of you have a similar construct...it's a portrait of someone told through a story that demonstrates some aspect of who they are. I downloaded the ambient music h...

Extra Credit! Listen to these pieces and leave feedback/comments on the blog

**extra credit closed, because they would have needed your feedback before the project was due** Hi All, We didn't get to listen to George, Matt and Zoya's drafts in class due to upload/time issues, but they would love to hear your feedback.  So, listen to these pieces and leave feedback in the comment section (at least 2 things that are working and 2 things that need improvement) for TWO points on your final Project 2 grade.  You must comment on all 3.  This is open to both sections.  Please leave comments under this blogpost so I don't miss anyone's comments and can keep track easily.  For example: "George, .....,"  "Matt...." "Zoya...." in one comment Here they are: https://georgecannoniii.blogspot.com/2018/04/audio-portrait-2.html http://lockz09.blogspot.com/2018/04/thomas-interview.html http://zoyasartiststatement.blogspot.com/

Really Great Soundwalk Blog Post

Heather Molloy wrote a particularly beautiful Soundwalk blog post that I wanted y'all to read... As the Queen of Absentmindedness, I always seem to be running a little (if not a lot) behind in getting to the places I need to be. More often than not, with a wandering mind and a Mood ™  playlist blasting in my ears, I spend little to no time actually listening to the environment I happen to be rushing through. Luckily enough, most of my days at Hunter turn into nights, which results in a lot of late night walks home,  arguably my favorite non-rushed pastime .   So, I decided to do my soundwalk from around 9 PM to about 10 PM,walking from Hunter at 68th  to my dorm building at 96th, where the Upper East Side and East Harlem just begin to blend into one another.  I think that, when most people think of NYC, they automatically experience a sort of auditory  hallucination where breaks squeal, jackhammers go of...

Agenda Lab 10

Agenda Lab 10 4.10.18 Screen Audio Portrait Projects (1.5hrs) Go over Project 3 and Storyboards (20 min) Screen Audio Portrait Projects Your piece should be uploaded to Soundcloud or Vimeo and linked to your blog before midnight tonight. If it’s not, we won’t be able to play it during class. You should aim to have your piece finished by tonight but I can give you until Sunday the 15th to finish it if you need more time and/or want to re-edit after getting feedback during lab. But the 15th is a hard, no excuses deadline. (Even if you’re sick, your hard drive dies and Premiere explodes, etc.) Unfortunately there won’t be time in lab for a typical feedback session, but as we listen, everyone will write down on a slip of paper two things that were working in each piece and two things that weren’t working, and pass these slips to the media maker. Go over Project 3, Storyboards and Production Documents You’ll be shooting your piece during next week’s lab and your production documents are...

Project 3 Assignment Description

Hi, we haven't been given the final description for Project 3, the continuity project, but I'm posting the description from last semester. The concept will be the same, but some things may be changed.  I'll post the description from this semester once we receive it. A couple of notes on the description below: -final piece should be around 4 minutes, so these are more like 15-30 second scenes -there's no dialogue, so you'll be adding in ambient recordings, sound effects and music -you'll probably need permission to shoot in the library and the gym -you can choose your partner for this piece but it needs to be someone you've never worked with before Create a scene with a clear beginning, middle and end, using one actor. Your storyboard will have no more than 8-10 panels. Remember, each panel equals one shot only. The actor will move through his/her environment. You’ll include a point-of-view sequence using continuity editing. For example, you can use m...

Blog 3 Assignment Description + clarification on blog posts

Hi All, The due date for Blog Post 3 (Sequence Analysis) has been changed to April 19.  Here's the assignment description: FILMP/MEDP 160 • SPRING 2018  BLOG 3 • Relationships Between Shots  For this assignment, you will pick a film scene (any genre) and break it down shot by shot. Please don’t give the plot summary. This blog is about editing choices. Describe how each shot relates to the next one by identifying editing strategies. Are the cuts made in accordance with continuity editing protocols or in a “montage” approach? Example: Matched action? 180 rule? Jump cuts? Graphic matches? Eyeline matches? You can identify point-of-view shots? How are the shots organized in terms of their content, composition, color, movement? Find a short piece of media (1 minute or less) you can watch several times on YouTube or Vimeo. If you can, please create a link in your blog to the media, or embed the clip (analyzing a piece of media allows you to reproduce it under the Fair ...
