Extra Credit! Listen to these pieces and leave feedback/comments on the blog

**extra credit closed, because they would have needed your feedback before the project was due**

Hi All,

We didn't get to listen to George, Matt and Zoya's drafts in class due to upload/time issues, but they would love to hear your feedback.  So, listen to these pieces and leave feedback in the comment section (at least 2 things that are working and 2 things that need improvement) for TWO points on your final Project 2 grade.  You must comment on all 3.  This is open to both sections.  Please leave comments under this blogpost so I don't miss anyone's comments and can keep track easily.  For example: "George, .....,"  "Matt...." "Zoya...." in one comment

Here they are:

  1. "George- Things that work:1. The story flows nicely and is easily to follow.
    2. The audio sounds clean
Needs improvement: 1. Try adding music it will help with the overall effect. 2. Try spacing out between cuts so the audience has time to sink in the information that was said."

"Thomas- Things that work: 1. Editing was good. You chose the right content to help tell the story. 2. Audio was clear and clean.
Needs improvement: 1. Adding around effects can help with the story. 2. Maybe you should make the spaces between the audio less. It was too long in some spots."

"Zoya- I'm not sure what the story was. The sound was a bit off and I couldn't hear the audio playing. It sounded like random noises.

  2. George:

Things that work: 1. The clarity of (Rinkal’s) voice is excellent! It sounds like he is sitting next to me telling me his story about Belgium, South Park and how he is motivated/likes to work. So, I suppose, in terms of production value or sound clarity, you nailed the levels.
    2. The transitions, in terms of content, were well executed and chosen. To me, there is a clear audio portrait to be heard with your project. Nice work.

Things to consider: 1. There could be some sound effects or spaces of silence between Rinkal’s thoughtful remarks. I think the insertion of SFX, also, could accentuate your narrative. 2. Perhaps an instrumental track, or a song of some sort, might add to and round out your project.

    Matt:

Things that work: 1. In the beginning of your project, I found myself smiling and enjoying the “Bad Boys” song/sfx choice. I thought that was effective in carrying the narrative Thomas introduces us to. Way to keep the portrait light, fun and interesting. 2. The story arc is significant and your portrait certainly has a quality that resonates with your audience and finishes on a hopeful tone. (So, all in all, I think the content is creative and offers an interesting glimpse at Thomas’ outlook and life). Well done.

Things to consider: 1. There are three lengthy spaces in your portrait that might benefit from being shaved down a bit. That, to me, would add to the fluidity of your piece. 2. I think your project might benefit from at least one more sound effect, or song. The “Bad Boys” part is great! Perhaps you might add one more sound bit…

    Zoya:

I would like to offer you some ideas and constructive criticism and feedback; but, unfortunately I cannot adequately do that after listening to your audio portrait. The first four minutes sound, to me, like a combination of doors shutting, sneezing, coughing, footsteps, and incomprehensible conversations between numerous people. I cannot discern what I am hearing. Perhaps this cut is not the one you intended to post. And, the final three minutes sound like room tone in a quiet setting. Wish I could offer more useful feedback.

  3. Thanks for the feedback, Niko and Dan! Zoya had a technical issue during export so you're just hearing the ambient sfx. Hopefully she'll have the full piece up soon.

  4. George- Working 1)The storyline works very nicely and It is pieced together very well. 2)The quality of his voice is clean and consistent in terms of volume.
Improvement 1)There were no pauses in this interview and it made it a little hard to take a breather. 2)It seemed very serious because you didn't add any sound effects which could make the interview more enjoyable.

Matt: Working 1)The quality of his voice is very clean. 2)The progression of the interview is very good and it flows nicely.
Improvement 1)Im sure you are aware of the large spaces of pauses in the interview and you could cut those and make them shorter. 2)You could probably add another sound effect because I thought the first one was a good touch.

Zoya- As happy as I am not to have heard my own voice, I would have liked to hear how the interview turned out.

  5. For George:

    1. At 1:04, there is a little bit another person’s sound and you can cut it.
    2. At 1:31, 1:44, 2:06, 2:25 and 2:51, you can make some breaks in. That will sound better.
    3. You need to add SFX and Music in I think.

    For Matt:

    1. Between the person’s sound and the music (or SFX) (begin at 0:40), you can put a transition to like the sounds. By the way, it’s a cool sound!
    2. From 1:35 to 1:44, 2:17 to 2:32, 3:17 to 3:24, I think the break time is too long here.
    3. You can put a background music in, and add more SFX in.
    4. The speed of person’s sound is too fast I think.

    For Zoya:

Unfortunately, I cannot hear your work.

  6. Matt:
Overall good job on the audio. I would just edit the song to so that it fades in and out quickly. There are also some really long pauses, I would shorten them or add music to bridge the gap between the audio pieces.

    George:
Great interview, the content was really good, but I feel the audio could have been a little clearer. I also think there should have been some light reflective music in the background, but overall good job!

    Zoya:
I think you did a really good job on the audio recording, Yeva's voice came out really clear. Great choice in music for both parts of the interview. You did a great job on interviewing her!!

  7. George:
    - Really liked the story arc of how you learned a life lesson through Belgium
    - Adding SFX and music would push the message further
    - Some unclear audio at :49 and 2:08
    - Big chunks of audio, can cut them down to pace out the story

    Zoya:
    - Interesting to put her favorite sandwich as the opening audio, unique way of getting to know someone
    - Maybe break away from music, because the entire piece has music
    - I thought the story could end after she decided to tell her parents about changing her major, you established her desire was to obtain freedom and changing your major is a sign of freedom.
    - Liked the audio of her laughing, made the interview more real and genuine.

    Matt:
    - Long pauses could be shortened
    - Good audio quality and very interesting story.
    - SFX and music would help push the story, maybe including sound of police sirens when the cops are introduced for example.
    - Around two minute mark the microphone moves which blocks the audio
