Agenda 3.1: More Premiere

Group Feedback Session on Roughcuts/Best of Shots (30 min) -what are the directors trying to communicate? -sequencing ideas? -pacing ideas? Premiere Demo (20 min) -how to cut we're just going to use the Razor tool (c) for this assignment.  The Razor tool is just what it sounds like.  With the Razor tool, you click on the places where you want to cut the footage (i.e., the In and Out points) and then switch to your Pointer tool (v), select the part you just cut, and hit delete. Pointer Tool (V) Razor Tool (c) Trimming: If you want to trim the beginning or the end of your clip, place the pointer (v) over the edge you want to trim until a red handlebar thing appears.  Pull this out or push it in to trim the clip, or extend something you had cut before. There are a lot of ways to cut on the timeline, but we'll start with those Transitions: In your Source window, navigate to effects, and then to video effects. Grab the Cross-D...

Agenda for 2.22: Intro to Premiere

Agenda for 2.22: Intro to Premiere Film Clip (10-15 min) In the Mood for Love https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYQ6f9lipEM (start at 50:27) framing, color, shape, perspective, wide, medium, close-up.... Premiere Basics (45 min) Either Reshoot or Edit (50 min) Goals for today Understanding the editing process Folder Structure/Workflow Premiere interface Import footage Creating sequences Three-point editing Cutting on the Timeline Export Save your premier file from the day with the date on it Assignment Clarification You're editing together. You should make all editing decisions together and share computer time. Film is a very collaborative industry and learning how to work with people who think differently from you is key. Just know that you and your partner probably won't agree on creative ideas or working style, and that's totally normal. Learning how to work inside that space respectfully is a really important skill. That'...

Agenda Lab 3: Shooting Define a Place

Agenda Lab 3: Shooting Define a Place Before you Shoot (15 min) Are there any questions about the point of the assignment? Ask me! You’ll have a little over an hour to shoot.  You should be back in the classroom 20 minutes before the end of class.  You need at least 20 shots (each person shoots 10 clips) that are at least 15 seconds long. Remember that the point of video is that things are moving! Try longer, 1-2 minute shots to let objects, people and light wander into your frame. Otherwise it’s no different than a still photo. The shooting must be shared equally I would recommend getting your “easy”/planned shots out of the way first, then give yourselves 30 minutes to be in the space, be creative, make mistakes, and try to shoot how the space feels to you, and try to communicate that visually. Use the stuff from last week...play with focus, play with colors, play with reflections, light and lines, camera angles, levels, perspective.  You want visual var...

Rubric for Assignment 1: Define a Place

This is what you'll be graded on for your first assignment: Shooting (technical): Was it in focus, exposed properly, 1/50th of a second, steady and/or tripod, correct frame rate Shooting (framing): Were the frames intentional?  Was there visual variety? Were they communicating the feel of the space? No pans, zooms, tilts or handheld dynamic without express consent Following instructions : Did they follow the assignment outline? Timeliness: Did they turn it in on time? Editing: Did they use the tools taught in lecture and lab? Team Player/Professionalism/Classroom Etiquette: Did they show up on time on the day of shooting and willfully participate in their partner's project? Did they come to class prepared, with their hard drive? Did they share the workload with their partner? Overall, d id they contribute to an effective and supportive classroom/learning environment?

Formatting Hard Drives

You may need to format your hard drives before class next Thursday.  A lot of times, they're already formatted for Macs and you can just plug them in and go.  Sometimes you need to launch the installer software on the drive.  If you're not sure, do a test run and try to drag and drop a file onto your hard drive.  If it copies, you're good.  If it won't copy, your drive needs to be formatted.   Here's one link: http://osxdaily.com/2012/01/04/format-an-external-hard-drive-or-usb-flash-drive-for-mac-os-x/ And one more: https://support.wdc.com/ knowledgebase/answer.aspx?ID= 29 ( This link is specifically for Western Digital  hard   drives  but I'm sure the process is the same.) Please do this before class because it may take a few minutes.

Mini Assignment Due Wednesday Night: Make a plan for Define a Space

Image
Come up with a plan for the Define a Space assignment that you're shooting in class on Thursday *You have to stay on campus or maybe just across the street on Lex or in the subway* You and your partner should decide on the space and what you want to communicate together, and visit the space before Thursday's lab (either on your own or with your partner.) Individually on your blog, write a few sentences about how the space makes you feel and what you want to communicate about the space.  And then come up with 10 shots, and post written descriptions of these on your blog.  (Remember each of you need to shoot at least video clips for the assignment on Thursday.  Then you'll pool those clips to edit into one piece.  I would recommend each doing 15 shots of at least 15 seconds (more if you want action to come in and out of the frame.)  Here's an example. If I was going to do my assignment on the sky bridge that we were at today, my shot/list and description...
