Lab 1 Agenda
Lab 1 Agenda
Introductions (20 min)
-Why are you taking this class?
-What are you into?
-How do you define yourself?
-What do you want to express, as a media maker?
Semester Overview (20 min)
lab is:
the practical application for what you're learning in lecture
focus on honing in on your artistic vision
focus on collaboration
focus on technical skills
focus on professionalism
This is what you'll be doing this semester:
1. Start a blog for the class that you can edit later for your portfolio
example: http://malgupta160.blogspot.com/
2. You'll create an Artist Statement
http://160-beckyssections.blogspot.com/2018/02/what-is-artist-statement.html
example: https://emmykmedia160.blogspot.com/2017/09/artist-statement.html
example (this is actually one student who wrote another student's artist statement, an exercise that we'll do today in class): http://160-beckyssections.blogspot.com/2018/02/artist-statement-examples.html
3. Project 1: Define A Space (basic cinematography)
example: https://sullivanm160.blogspot.com/2017/10/haunter-from-simone-sullivan-on-vimeo.html
example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMya7tDmNc4&feature=youtu.be
(I like this piece because they did a great job of making the viewer feel like they were IN the space, but it didn't quite meet the requirements because it relied too heavily on music and because some of the shots, zooms and pans, were unnecessary and sloppy)
4. Premiere Pro Basics
5. Project 2: Audio Portrait (interviewing skills, intro to audio as a medium, and multi-track editing)
example: https://roxanewu.blogspot.com/2017/11/audio-portrait-final-assignment-2.html
(great example of SFX but maybe not interviewing skills)
example: https://soundcloud.com/user-467762660/final-audio-project-emmy/s-2l0kL
(great interview, music and sound effects)
6. Multi-Track editing in Premiere (music, sound effects and interview)
7. Storyboarding
8. Project 3: Continuity and Directing
example: http://samantafilip.blogspot.com/2017/12/assignment-3-continuity-project.html
example: https://nicolesaladino.blogspot.com/2017/12/leave-me-alone-final-project.html

Syllabus Overview and Attendance Policy (10 min)
you are responsible for everything on the syllabus; it's a contract
syllabus link: http://160-beckyssections.blogspot.com/2018/02/spring-2018-syllabus.html
attendance policy here: http://160-beckyssections.blogspot.com/2018/02/attendance-policy.html
If you are having ANY issues that are affecting your learning experience, please come talk to me
You will have to edit outside class, most likely in Hunter labs
In addition to the main projects, there are small weekly lab assignments
Grades
for projects, the emphasis is on teamwork, professionalism and following technical directions
if you're a Film or Media major, you need to get a B in the class
Hard Drives
You need a hard drive for next week and you need to bring it with you to every lab. It's going to cost you around $80-100 but if you plan on making films or being a photographer, you'll need hard drives. I have at least 20 in my closet right now 😱
GTechs are recommended (but not a must, they're just popular and have a warranty), it also needs to be portable and 7200pm. You can buy one from Amazon, Best Buy, B&H, Adorama, New Egg, etc. Google it and see what comes up
keywords are *portable* *7200rpm* and at least 500gb.
If you're using a PC at home, you can partition the drive to make it compatible for both Mac and PC, but you'll need to allot more space for Mac, because we use Mac at Hunter and your media files are big. (Maybe allot 90% space for Mac and 10% for PC? Sounds like Rei and Thomas know how to do this so I nominate them to give us a tutorial if needed! ) Just make sure you have enough room to get you through the semester in this class.
What is an Artist Statement? (5min)
This short statement is to help you and your potential audience get an initial glimpse of the
media maker behind the work. It is an important part both of thinking about yourself as a
creator, a producer of ideas, images and more, and of getting the word out about your
work. It may seem tricky to develop a statement when you may not have a large body of
work, but the statement is aspirational, a route to the future as well as a statement of your
current interests.
Artist Statement Exercise: Write each other's artist statements (1hr)
Artist Statement Exercise: Write each other's artist statements (1hr)
Pair up, and interview each other (15 min each) you can talk about anything that has to do with you as an artist, but here are some suggested questions:
-how do you define yourself as an artist and/or media maker?
-what led you to being an artist/media maker
-what are you passionate about?
-what motivates you?
-can you think of any life experiences that influenced how you identify yourself and what you want to say/how you want to express yourself?
-what do you want to say?
-what do you need to say (as an artist?)
-what do you want to communicate to people?
-how do you do this (or want to do this?) through which medium?
Due next week, Wednesday before midnight (11:59pm)
