Mini Assignment Due Wednesday Night: Make a plan for Define a Space

Come up with a plan for the Define a Space assignment that you're shooting in class on Thursday

*You have to stay on campus or maybe just across the street on Lex or in the subway*

You and your partner should decide on the space and what you want to communicate together, and visit the space before Thursday's lab (either on your own or with your partner.) Individually on your blog, write a few sentences about how the space makes you feel and what you want to communicate about the space.  And then come up with 10 shots, and post written descriptions of these on your blog.  (Remember each of you need to shoot at least video clips for the assignment on Thursday.  Then you'll pool those clips to edit into one piece.  I would recommend each doing 15 shots of at least 15 seconds (more if you want action to come in and out of the frame.)

Here's an example. If I was going to do my assignment on the sky bridge that we were at today, my shot/list and description might read:

"The sky bridge is a place where people go to relax.  When I walk through it, I have a keen sense of being in New York City, because there is so much happening there.  People playing guitar, or handing out political pamphlets or just finding their place and solitude among the masses.  And then there's the NYC skyline, reflected in the glass, and the shadows on the floor that remind me of the brightness and darkness of life here."

1. "Wide Shot ground level of people walking across the bridge, just their shoes..."

2. "Medium shot of reflection of buildings in the sky bridge windows..."

In your shot list, think about visual variety, color, shape, feeling, light, and what you include/exclude from your frame.  All of those things we practiced in class last week.  And no actors! Does that make sense?  You don't need to spend more than 15 minutes on this written mini-assignment blog post. (But it is helpful so spend more time if you want.) It's just for you so that you can have a plan for the assignment. And I won't hold you to your shot list.  If you get inspired when you're in the space to do something else, that's totally fine and great.  But it's always good to go in with a plan, even if you end up abandoning it.

Post it on your blog by Wednesday night and let me know if you have any questions.

Good job today btw!  You all processed an obscene amount of material in a very short time and I was impressed with the way you handled those circa 1985 tripods!
